Jude 7 says Sodom and Gomorrah were given as an example of what will happen to the wicked on Judment Day. That they will receive the punishment of 'eternal fire.' But Sodom and Gomorrah aren't still burning, are they?
So it becomes apparent that the Greek word for 'eternal' does not always mean what we think it means. In fact, in this case, it means: until they're burned up. Which is what the Bible says over a dozen times, about the wicked on Judgement Day.
"...and the time came for the dead to be judged...and to destroy those who destroy the earth." - Revelation 11:18 (NASV)
"...all sinners will be destroyed; there will be no future for the wicked." - Psalm 37:38 (NIV)

"By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly." - 2 Peter 3:7 (NIV)
"Jesus became one of us. He died to destroy the devil, who had power over death." - Hebrews 2:14 (CEV)
"Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell." - Matthew 10:28
"...by turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to ashes he condemned them to extinction, making them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly." - 2 Peter 2:6 (NASV), Jude 1:7
"The day is coming when all proud and evil people will burn like straw. On that day they will burn up, and there will be nothing left of them...You shall trample the wicked, for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet on the day that I do this," says the Lord of hosts." - Malachi 4:1,3 (GNT, NKJV)
"...the wicked shall perish, and the enemies of the LORD shall be as the fat of lambs: they shall consume; into smoke shall they consume away. - Psalm 37:20 (KJV)
Can an Ethiopian change his skin or a leopard its spots? Neither can you do good who are accustomed to doing evil. Therefore I will scatter you like straw that is blown away by a desert wind." - Jeremiah 13:23,24 (NIV, GW)
"The day is near when I, the Lord, will judge all nations... My people have drunk a bitter cup of punishment on my sacred hill. But all the heathen will drink a still more bitter cup of punishment; they will drink it all and be as if they had never existed." - Obadiah 1:16 (GNT, NET)
"A little while, and the wicked will be no more; though you look for them, they will not be found." - Psalm 37:10 (NIV)
"For the Lord shall rise up...that he may do his work, his strange work; and bring to pass his act, his strange act." - Isaiah 28:21,22 (KJV)
"The Lord isn't slow to do what He promised, as some people think. Instead, He is patient with you, because He doesn't want to destroy anyone, but wants all people to have an opportunity to turn to Him and change the way they think and act." - 2 Peter 3:9 (GW)

If you've lost a loved one, I can understand and appreciate that you're comforted by the belief that he or she is in heaven, or tempted to communicate with him or her. But the Bible warns often of how dangerous that would be: so dangerous that you risk losing eternal life through deception.
So I share with you the following, even though it may shock, offend and hurt you, because the danger is serious enough to risk doing so.
''The living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing...Their love, their hate and their jealousy have long since vanished...in the grave, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom.'' Ecclesiastes 9:5-6
''His breath goes forth, he returns to the earth; in that very day his thoughts perish.'' - Psalm 146:4
''I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David [whom God called the apple of His eye] died and was buried, and his tomb is here to this day...For David did not ascend to heaven.'' - Acts 2:29,34
Jesus said, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going there to wake him up." His disciples replied, "Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better." Jesus had been speaking of his death, but his disciples thought he meant natural sleep. So then he told them plainly, "Lazarus is dead." John 11:11-14
''God...alone is immortal...'' - 1 Timothy 6:15-16
''...the work of Satan [is being] displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders, and in every sort of evil that deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.'' - 2 Thessalonians 2:9,10
Looks - and voices - can be deceiving.
''...Watch out that you are not deceived...'' - Luke 21:8
''...woe to [you], because the devil has gone down to you! He is filled with fury, because he knows that his time is short.'' - Revelation 12:12
''Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.'' - 1 Peter 5:8
''...these things I have told you, that when the time comes, you may remember that I told you of them...'' - John 16:4 skip
