How You Can Help the Hurricane Victims and Avoid Scams
Telemarketers
As you know, the victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and other natural disasters need our help. But Trent Stamp, of Charity Navigator, has advised that we not donate through telemarketers, to avoid their processing fees and maximize our donations.
Fraudulent E-mails and Web Sites
He has also advised that we watch out for fraudulent e-mails and web sites. (more information following the donation links below)

The Greatest Immediate Need
Money is the greatest need in a natural disaster, because it gives the relief agencies the flexability to buy whatever they need to help the human and animal victims.
Matching Donations
If you can afford to donate money, check to see if your employer is offering matching donations, and if so, please donate through them instead of through the following charities, to maximize sorely needed donations.
Please donate as much and as often as you can afford. If your employer isn't and won't be offering matching donations, donate below. But first, please read the following.

To minimize your chances of donating at a spoofed site - a fraudulent copy of a legitimate charity's official web site - and becoming the victim of phishing, download and install either SpoofStick or the Netcraft Toolbar, plugins for Internet Explorer and extensions for Firefox that detect phishing sites.
The detectors help you investigate a site as a way to significantly reduce, if not avoid, the chance of having your private data stolen by phishing scams.
